The present work based on field screening procedure for two seasons to detect the susceptibility and tolerance of five Egyptian cultivars (Two single cross cultivars SC10 and SC129 and three of the three-way cultivars TW 310; TW321 and TW 322). The parameters for assessing corn borer damage based on leaf injury; stem tunneling; larval content; dead heart formation and yield capacity.
The data obtained showed that the single cross cultivar SC129 proved to be the least susceptible cultivars towards the three corn borers Sesami critica; Chilo sp. and Ostrinia nubilalis infestation. The mechanism of tolerance was significantly detected with regard to the three way cultivar TW322. This cultivar exhibited the highest infestation index (630 on the average), but the general yield capacity was high in comparison to the other tested cultivars.
